CONSIDERAÇÕES A RESPEITO DOS MOVIMENTOS DE MASSA OCORRIDOS EM JANEIRO DE 2011 NA BACIA DO CÓRREGO D’ANTAS, NOVA FRIBURGO – RJ

Abstract

The downpour rain that occurred in January 2011 in the mountainous region of the State of Rio de Janeiro caused floods and landslides of enormous proportions, causing the destruction of thousands houses and a high number of deaths in its wake. One of the hardest hit cities in the re-gion were Nova Friburgo, where much of the urban area of the city was affected. In this work, we analyzed the im-pacts of extreme events in the watershed of D'Antas Stream. On January 12th, a mud-flow approximately with 8 km length, affected the main stream causing the destruc-tion of lots buildings. This article describes the mud flow and mass movement and analyze the geomorphological predisposing factors, with emphasis on the possible role played by knickpoints and concavities. It also analyzes the factors related to human action and rains triggering factor - rain recorded on January 11th and 12th – based on studies carried out in the framework of technical cooperation between the Geological Survey of Rio de Janeiro (RJ-DRM ) and the Faculty of Geology of UERJ.
