Abstract

This paper proposes to examine the process of expansion of closed condominiums in Rio da Prata in the neighborhood Campo Grande (Rio de Janeiro), with the increase in segregation in the socio-scale city. Campo Grande is a neighborhood away from developed areas, in the western area of the city, and now developed some autonomy as to provide services for the rest of the city. The cited "neighborhood" had dominated the rural way of life, now greatly reduced. The construction of closed condominiums in this area is analyzed from the perceived decentralization in large cities and the consequent decentralization of elites. Therefore, the presence of middle classes in Campo Grande expressed an overall process, transforming the organization of city and neighborhood. Thus, search an analysis of the self-segregation process in the neighborhood, looking for his reasons in different scales of analysis of the problem. The main theoretical references used in developing these ideas are Santos (2001), on the production of geographical space and value of place in this process; Massey (2000), in view of the overall size of the place, since the production of unequal space through its private ownership; Harvey (1980) and Lefebvre (2008) in his vision of integrating geographic area.
