Abstract

This article considers development as a discourse propagated by Western countries to be followed by the rest of the world. The analysis will consider the expansion of capitalism not only as shaping the configuration of the contemporary world, but also as serving as a productive model that for the past five centuries has functioned as a civilizing and socializing agent. This work also explores the viability of the term "sustainable development," aiming to reflect and question the strategy's potential to mitigate society's actual environmental challenges.
